Shelley Lubben and anti-porn activism

I have some concerns about Shelley Lubben and do not believe I, or anyone else should rely on her as a primary source about the truth in porn. While the information she gives IS accurate, I question the actions behind her activism:

– She says she is a prophet. If I had any doubts that she was a fundamentalist, much less a proselytizing Christian, they are gone. Even when Christians talk about self-proclaimed prophets, they usually intend that they are in a church setting. This leads me to think Pink Cross is part of her “church.” Also, an attempt to bolster credibility by implying that everything she says is absolute truth. Nobody should have to say they are a prophet to be taken seriously, even among other Christians.

– She says her organization always needs money, but doesn’t do much to help women exited from the sex industry. That, plus the donations and payments she receives from lectures and writing, would leave plenty of money behind. It is a common problem in sex industry abolitiionist groups that not only are they dominated by Christians who seek to proselytize and make sure the charity from their groups appear to be exclusively motivated by Christians, but fail to prioritize the exited women and make sure funds go to them. This has 2 effects: It leads people to believe all abolitionists are conservative/Christian, and that people need to be religious in order to be charitable and help the marginalized. Women deserve better than that.

– None of the “testimonies” on her site can be found anywhere else, nor have sources. I’m not saying they aren’t true, but that they are used exclusively for Pink Cross, and probably have embellishments. When she films exited women, she does it to make it look like they are supposed to be acting for a film. They have to repeat over and over for a super-dramatic, emotional effect that will appeal to her. Apparently, their original take is not good enough. It’s a marketing tactic. Welcome to capitalism.

– Some of the women she claimed to “rescue” were already exited from the industry. She is taking credit for their actions. I think these women should be listened to, and not prioritize Lubben because she is an “authority” or whatever. Hierarchies suck, anyway. Women don’t benefit from them. Also, it’s been said by one of the women that she gave out pills and other drugs to them to keep them doped up, and even stole prescription pills from them.
