The Happy Hooker myth

i’m making a separate post to address this bullshit so i don’t derail the seriousness of the original thread:

“This is like saying “I think it’s disrespectful to work as a waitress or waiter when you don’t have to because lots of other people have to so you shouldn’t even if it makes you happy””

first of all it’s a dude saying this, so it’s not surprising.

but this choice politics of “don’t have to”-ism is clearly advocating slumming. it makes prostitution and other survival methods of poverty an activity for tourists who act like it’s something you can leave from anytime. it turns oppression into a fetish and a “choice,” it glorifies the bootstrap philosophy. not to mention the search for whatever “happiness” is is purely an american concept and a dead-end one at that, one that has become tied in with consumerism and the sexual objectification of female bodies. very few people get to work at doing what they love.

and snowflakeespecial is being very honest with her knowledge and friendships with survival sex workers/prostituted women. i’m pretty sure more people are familiar with them but don’t want to admit it because they were either not friends with them or were not 100% sure of the circumstances due to lack of familiarity or trust. sex industry advocates spend a lot of money on propaganda to create their version of the “truth” and shy away from the stereotypes and anything “negative” (abuse, drug addiction, sex trafficking, mental illness, poverty). they are not going to platform the women who have had negative experiences or who started as children/teenagers or were groomed by a boyfriend pimp or their mother who was a madam because it goes against their respectability politics; those women are not worthy enough to have voices. they look down on any and all victims – including the lower classes or women of lower status because they can afford to ignore victimization and claim it doesn’t exist or project the blame on other agents (usually the victims themselves who must have “chosen” to be there).

that bipolar so-called “trailer trash” who was pimped out by her incestuous father and brother as a child to deep throat their friends was real. the deli clerk at the grocery store who is also a mother, who gets called all sorts of horrible names by checkout customers who are her johns on the side, is real.

men joke that being a prostitute and a wife are the same thing, that the only difference is that the latter is a lifelong commitment. radfems would argue that both involve compulsory PIV in exchange for survival. they are the same because to them women are interchangeable and disposable. women can divorce their husbands; there is no widespread “exit” from the sex industry.
